Motorola Z10 RIZR

Motorola Z10 RIZR super review

Guide price: £299.00

Compact slider, Smartphone. The Motorola Z10 is a successor to the powerful Z8 smartphone. The MotoRIZR Z10 has the same form factor as the Z8, with the slide open design, that means that the curved form fits the shape of your face, the microphone being right infront of your mouth, enhancing call quality.

The Z10 is very solid and well made in stainless steel and perspex and can easily take the rigors of everyday life and even being dropped without serious damage. The 2" screen is a high resolution/definition TFT and is very crisp and clear but far too small for the Z10's video capabilities. Even the 3.2 megapixel camera, which is way behind this phones rivals pixel counts, is very competent and takes very bright, detailed photos is let down by the very inadequate screen. Marketing this phone as the ultimate film makers phone is true up to a point, with its QGVA @ 30fps recording and feature packed Media Studio/Editor onboard software, it certainly has the ability, again let down by the tiny screen.
Call quality is excellent and the slider mechanism is well built and very satisfying to operate, this is an innovation that works and is not just a gimmick, every phone call I made on the test was clear and and the people being called all reported that they could hear me clearly. Not so good is the sound from the large speaker, under the rather cramped keypad, going on it's relatively large size on the phone you would expect it to give a good output, although this is not the case! Although it does not sound 'tinny' it lacks power and when you use the slider mechanism, the sound breaks up and is horribly distorted, the media player is also extremely lackluster and does not feature the usual Motorola onscreen 'eye candy' it does however have very useful side mounted dedicated media operating buttons which is at least something in it's favour!

Cons
Screen far too small
Chunky
keypad far too cramped
Slow startup
Hard to navigate

Pros
Special Features:
3G with HSDPA Mobile Broadband
ShoZu Preloaded
Asphalt2 3D game preloaded
Bluetooth with A2DP
Onboard Media Editor
MicroSD Preloaded with The Ultimate Bourne Collection

Hilary's Conclusion: Tough and attractive with excellent call quality, a good camera and superb camcorder and onboard video editing capabilities, but possessing an awkward and slow GUI, a lackluster media player and a very small screen. Not as smart as it should or could be!

The Z10 is labelled a smartphone as it uses UIQ OS, not the usual Motorola OS
